Thomas grew up in the small, farming community of Allison, Iowa, where his father served as a Lutheran minister.  He graduated from Allison-Bristow High School in 2000.  In 2004, he received a Bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy from Drake University, where he graduated summa cum laude with university honors.  After briefly working as a public policy analyst in Des Moines, he earned a Master’s degree and PhD in political science at Louisiana State University.  Following a one-year appointment as a Visiting Research Fellow at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he accepted a position as an assistant professor of political science at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  While at McNeese, he taught courses in American politics, ancient and modern political thought, and American constitutional law.  After teaching for four years, he decided to return to rural Iowa to start a family and to begin a career in public service as a prosecuting attorney.  Accordingly, in the fall of 2014, he enrolled at the University of Iowa College of Law.  While in law school, he was named the law school’s best oralist and top overall advocate.  He also served as a member of the University’s National Moot Court Team, received the University’s Distinguished Student Leader Award, and served as President of the Student Chapter of the Federalist Society.  In May 2017, he graduated from law school and accepted a position as the Assistant County Attorney for Greene County.  In November 2018, Thomas was elected Greene County Attorney.  He and his wife, Dr. Susan Laehn, are proud to call Greene County home.
